SCSI: An Explanatory Diagram
Computer SCSI Interfaces
With the rapid development of the SCSI system computers are now commonly fitted with a
SCSI port that can feature any of the following;
Standard 25 way D type
Half pitch 50 way D type (SCSI II)
Half pitch 68 way D type (SCSI III)
Half pitch 68 way Centronics type (SCSI V)
The standard interface on the card is a female or socket therefore the link cables
normally feature a male or plug connector at either end. To accomodate this we have listed
the most common combinations.
External SCSI Device Interfaces
The SCSI device itself can have a number of different interfaces. Essentially, with SCSI V still in
it’s infancy, they can be divided into 4 different generations; SCSI I, SCSI II, SCSI III and SCSI V.
SCSI I Generation :
50 way Centronics Connector with transfer rates of up to 5 Mbps on
an 8 bit bus
SCSI II Generation:
Half pitch 50 way D Connector with transfer rates of normally
10 Mbps, however up to 20 Mbps (depending on whether 16 or 32 bit)
SCSI III Generation:
Half pitch 68 way D Connector with transfer rates up to 20 Mbps on
16 bit bus (32 bit use is also possible)
SCSI V Generation:
Very High Density (0.8mm) 68 way Centronics Connector with
transfer rates over 40 Mbps on 32 bit bus
The standard device output is a female connector, therefore normal link cables are of male
to male design.
Computer (25D Skt) to SCSI Device
The 25 way D type is the most common connector found on the earlier computers before
users became familiar with populating their own PCs with faster SCSI cards in recognition
that many new peripherals have much faster capabilities.
Features:
ZIP drive compatible cables
Allows a 25 D type SCSI interface to connect to all popular SCSI level
chain devices
