ThereceiversectionincludestheReceiverOpticalSub-
Assembly (ROSA) and the amplification/quantization
circuitry. The ROSA, containing a PIN photodiode and
customtransimpedanceamplifier,islocatedattheoptical
interfaceandmateswiththeLCopticalconnector.The
ROSA output is fed to a custom IC that provides post-
amplificationandquantization.
ReceiverLossofSignal(Rx_LOS)
The post-amplification IC also includes transition
detection circuitry which monitors the ac level of
incoming optical signals and provides a TTL/CMOS
compatiblestatussignaltothehost(pin8).Anadequate
opticalinputresultsinalowRx_LOSoutputwhileahigh
Rx_LOSoutputindicatesanunusableopticalinput.The
Rx_LOSthresholdsarefactorysetsothatahighoutput
indicates a definite optical fault has occurred. Rx_LOS
canalsobemonitoredviathetwo-wireserialinterface
(addressA2h,byte110,bit1).
FunctionalDataI/O
TheAFCT-57R5APZinterfaceswiththehostcircuitboard
throughtwentyI/Opins(SFPelectricalconnector)iden-
tified by function inTable 2.The board layout for this
interfaceisdepictedinFigure6.
The AFCT-57R5APZ high speed transmit and receive
interfaces require SFP MSA compliant signal lines on
thehostboard.Tosimplifyboardrequirements,biasing
resistorsandaccouplingcapacitorsareincorporatedinto
theSFPtransceivermodule(perSFF-8074i)andhenceare
notrequiredonthehostboard.TheTx_Disable,Tx_Fault,
and Rx_LOS require TTL lines on the host board (per
SFF-8074i)ifused.Ifanapplicationchoosesnottotake
advantageofthefunctionalityofthesepins,caremustbe
takentogroundTx_Disable(fornormaloperation).
Figure 2 depicts the recommended interface circuit to
linktheAFCT-57R5APZtosupportingphysicallayerICs.

requirements for the AFCT-57R5APZ. All mechanical
adjustmentsaremadeatthefactorypriortoshipment.
Tampering with, modifying, misusing or improp-
erly handling the AFCT-57R5APZ will void the product
warranty. It may also result in improper operation and
possibly overstress the laser source. Performance deg-
radation or device failure may result. Connection of
theAFCT-57R5APZtoalightsourcenotcompliantwith
ANSIFC-PIorIEEE802.3specifications,operatingabove
maximumoperatingconditionsorinamannerinconsis-
tentwithit’sdesignandfunctionmayresultinexposure
tohazardouslightradiationandmayconstituteanact
ofmodifyingormanufacturingalaserproduct.Persons

ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)
TheAFCT-57R5APZiscompatiblewithESDlevelsfound
in typical manufacturing and operating environments
asdescribedinTable1.Inthenormalhandlingandoper-
ation of optical transceivers, ESD is of concern in two
circumstances.
Thefirstcaseisduringhandlingofthetransceiverprior
toinsertionintoanSFPcompliantcage.Toprotectthe
device,it’simportanttousenormalESDhandlingprecau-
tions.Theseincludeusingofgroundedwriststraps,work-
benchesandfloorwhereveratransceiverishandled.
Thesecondcasetoconsiderisstaticdischargestothe
exteriorofthehostequipmentchassisafterinstallation.
Iftheopticalinterfaceisexposedtotheexteriorofhost
equipment cabinet, the transceiver may be subject to
systemlevelESDrequirements.
