The
BCM5706
is a fully integrated Layer 4 solution. It is designed to lift
server performance to an unprecedented level. By offloading network
tasks traditionally run on the CPU, the
BCM5706
reduces CPU
utilization and power consumption significantly. In addition, iSCSI
support significant reduction of the cost of network storage connections
by utilizing well-known Ethernet technology.
The
BCM5706
integrates TCP/IP and iSCSI functionality along with a
complete 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet Media Access Control
and Physical Layer Transceiver solution for high performance network
applications. It adds unprecedented functionality in a Network
Controller device – support of TCP/IP and iSCSI functions. The
BCM5706
is fabricated in a low-voltage .13u CMOS process providing
a low-power system solution. The
BCM5706
provides a complete
Gigabit Ethernet NIC, iSCSI HBA or LOM solution.
The
BCM5706
includes dedicated HW and processors that process the
frames that traverse it and provides TCP/IP functionality. The BCM5706
adds the TCP/IP headers and copies the data directly from the
application buffers on the host, relieving the host CPU from these time
consuming operations. Processing power of a server is essentially
doubled as more CPU cycles are dedicated to user applications. The
BCM5706
removes the TCP/IP headers from the frames it receives off
the wire. It processes all frames for TCP/IP. It posts the data directly to
application buffers, saving precious host CPU resources required for this
activity.
The
BCM5706
also supports the iSCSI standard. Connections to high
capacity storage can now be made using standard Ethernet equipment,
but with backwards compatibility to today’s block storage infrastructure.
The
BCM5706
provides HW hooks for some of the most time
consuming tasks. The
BCM5706
adds Framing support (Marker or PDU
Alignment) and computes the header and data CRC. BCM5706 strips
off the Framing from frames it receives from the ire prior to storing them
in the iSCSI buffers. The
BCM5706
will compute and compare iSCSI
CRC (header and data) with the values inside frames received from the
wire. Errors found will be indicated to the iSCSI SW.
The
BCM5706
includes a 10/100/1000-Mbps Ethernet MAC with
full/half-duplex capability at all speeds, and 10/100/1000 copper PHY.
Support for the following 802.3 functions is featured in the MAC:
VLAN tagging, layer 2 priority encoding, link aggregation, and full-
duplex flow control.
The device provides both PCI v2.2 and PCI-X v1.0 bus interfaces. The
BCM5706
provides large on-chip buffer memory for stand-alone
operation. Dual on-chip high-performance processors enable custom
frame processing features, including full TCP processing and TCP
segmentation.
The transceiver is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.3 standard for
auto-negotiation of speed. Additionally, several Plug and Play
enhancements have been added to make the device even more user-
friendly. A Link Quality Indicator LED gives installers an instant visual
indication if there are any issues with the wiring plant supporting
operation at the desired speed. This includes physical wiring defects or
channel conditions, such as excessive cable length, return loss, crosstalk,
echo, and noise. Broadcom’s remote cable management and diagnostics
software can be used with the device to provide remote management of
the cable and a first level of diagnostics and fault isolation. The
BCM5706
continually monitors various channel conditions. The
optional WireSpeed
TM
capability allows the BCM5706 to force auto-
negotiation to be automatically limited by the speed that the channel can
reliably support rather than the performance of the end equipment.
