QUALCOMM’s CSM5200
Cell Site Modem (CSM)
device is a Wideband Code
Division Multiple Access
(WCDMA) digital baseband
modem for infrastructure and
test equipment that supports the
UMTS Frequency Division
Duplex-Direct Spread (FDD-DS
— also referred to as ITU IMT-
2000 DS) third-generation (3G)
air interface standard for
mobile telephony. The
CSM5200 device provides
significant capacity and
performance increases over
previous generations of CSM
devices while offering
compatibility with existing
Global System for Mobile
Communications (GSM)
networks. The CSM5200 device
provides data throughput of up
to 384 kilobits per second
(kbps) per user and up to 2
Megabits per second (Mbps) in
aggregate. Higher aggregrate
data rates can be achieved by
cascading multiple CSM5200
devices in any given cell. This
provides a dramatic
improvement over the 9.6 kbps
data rate offered by current
GSM implementations as well
as the data rates achieved
through evolutionary standards,
such as HSCSD, GPRS, and
EDGE. The CSM5200 device
will enable a new generation of
data-enabled terminals capable
of supporting high-speed data
applications with rich graphical
content, such as wireless
streaming video. Network
operators will also benefit
greatly from cost efficiencies
and capacity enhancements,
especially in capacity-
challenged urban environments
that need additional cell-sites.
In conjunction with our
infrastructure partners,
QUALCOMM provides a
migration path for existing GSM
operators to seamlessly
enhance their existing
equipment with 3G wireless
capabilities and efficiencies.

manufacturers with an end-to-
end tested IMT-2000 DS
solution that is compatible with
QUALCOMM’s MSM5200
Mobile Station Modem (MSM)
device and other IMT-2000 DS
MSM devices. In addition, the
CSM5200 device comes with a
full set of reference notes,
designs and software that
leverage existing CSM expertise
and design knowledge to
reduce product development
time and equipment cost.
The CSM5200 device
supports up to 16 simultaneous
voice or data users, a
significant increase in density
compared to existing first
generation IMT-2000 DS
solutions. The CSM5200
architecture provides dynamic
resource mapping of up to 16
uplink channel resources and
32 downlink channel resources;
high-data-rate channels require
only a single resource. Each
channel supports searching,
demodulation and decoding.
The CSM5200 device provides
infrastructure manufacturers
with support for the IMT-2000
DS wireless standard, with its up
to 2 Mbps data rate
capabilities, and complements
QUALCOMM’s existing product
line of IS-95A/B- and IMT-
2000, 1x-based CSM solutions.
