12FN7186.7December 15, 2011Applications InformationProduct DescriptionThe EL5120, EL5220, and EL5420 voltage feedbackamplifiers are fabricated using a high voltage CMOSprocess. They exhibit rail-to-rail input and output capability,they are unity gain stable, and have low power consumption(500A per amplifier). These features make the EL5120,EL5220, and EL5420 ideal for a wide range of general-purpose applications. Connected in voltage follower modeand driving a load of 10kΩ and 12pF, the EL5120, EL5220,and EL5420 have a -3dB bandwidth of 12MHz whilemaintaining a 10V/s slew rate. The EL5120 is a singleamplifier, the EL5220 is a dual amplifier, and the EL5420 is aquad amplifier.Operating Voltage, Input, and OutputThe EL5120, EL5220, and EL5420 are specified with asingle nominal supply voltage from 5V to 15V or a splitsupply with its total range from 5V to 15V. Correct operationis guaranteed for a supply range of 4.5V to 16.5V. MostEL5120, EL5220, and EL5420 specifications are stable overboth the full supply range and operating junctiontemperature range of -40°C to +125°C. Parameter variationswith operating voltage and/or temperature are shown in thetypical performance curves.The input common-mode voltage range of the EL5120,EL5220, and EL5420 extends 500mV beyond the supplyrails. The output swings of the EL5120, EL5220, andEL5420 typically extend to within 80mV of positive andnegative supply rails with load currents of 5mA. Decreasingload currents will extend the output voltage range evencloser to the supply rails. Figure 25 shows the input andoutput waveforms for the device in the unity-gainconfiguration. Operation is from ±5V supply with a 10kΩ loadconnected to GND. The input is a 10VP-P sinusoid. Theoutput voltage is approximately 9.985VP-P.FIGURE 25. OPERATION WITH RAIL-TO-RAIL INPUT ANDOUTPUTShort Circuit Current LimitThe EL5120, EL5220, and EL5420 will limit the short circuitcurrent to ±120mA if the output is directly shorted to thepositive or the negative supply. If an output is shortedindefinitely, the power dissipation could easily increase suchthat the device may be damaged. Maximum reliability ismaintained if the output continuous current never exceeds±30mA. This limit is set by the design of the internal metalinterconnects.Output Phase ReversalThe EL5120, EL5220, and EL5420 are immune to phasereversal as long as the input voltage is limited from (VS-)of the device with the input voltage driven beyond the supplyrails. Although the device's output will not change phase, theinput's overvoltage should be avoided. If an input voltageexceeds supply voltage by more than 0.6V, electrostaticprotection diodes placed in the input stage of the devicebegin to conduct and overvoltage damage could occur.FIGURE 26. OPERATION WITH BEYOND-THE-RAILS INPUTPower DissipationWith the high-output drive capability of the EL5120, EL5220,and EL5420 amplifiers, it is possible to exceed the +125°Cmaximum operating junction temperature under certain loadcurrent conditions.
