APPLICATION NOTES
Because of variables such as the sensitivity of the device and
the interface to the host computer, several adjustment possibi-
lities have been scheduled on the chip. We strongly recom-
mend a two step approach, with the first step using all possible
adjustments, in order to define the correct values for the final
implementation.
TCS proposes the following boards :
– FCEV15A140 : the evaluation board
This board provides several adjustments in order to develop
your entire system with the FingerChip
T:
H Analog to Digital Converter
H All digital input/outputs go through an FPGA
H Outputs are buffered
H Several analog signals are adjustable on board
H FPGA is programmed to be connected to the parallel port
of a PC
H the board is delivered with imaging software
– FCDEMO3 : the ergonomic board
This board demonstrates how to mechanically implement the
FingerChip
T . It is delivered with imaging software running on
a PC. The board must be connected to the parallel port in EPP
mode.
You can see below an example of the implementation to use
in the final system. Its rule is ”one clock’s stroke, one data”. It’s
very simple as the FingerChip
T is directly connected to the
Analog to Digital Converter (ADC).
Future versions of FingerChip
T will integrate the ADC directly
on–chip, so user will have the same features with only one
chip.

SOFTWARE
TCS doesn’t provide any specific authentication software with
the FingerChip
T. Imaging software will be provided with the
application board, so that it will be possible to evaluate the sen-
sor’s capabilities (standard bitmap image files of the fingerprint
may be saved), but no matching software for extracting minutia
and performing comparisons is provided.
FingerChip
T is compatible with software adapted to optical
sensors, but it is better to take advantage of some specific fea-
tures of the device, and particularly the fact that large images
with more information may be obtained thus enabling a reduc-
tion of the FAR & FRR.
Different algorithms from different companies are currently
under adaptation to the FingerChip
T, so if you need authenti-
cation software, please contact TCS.
Reducing the area : sweep FingerChip
T
The smaller the area, the less expensive the device.
One of the major topics of fingerprint capture is reducing the
cost of the sensor.
FingerChip
T technology enables such a reduction by using an
array with very few columns. A user will sweep his finger over
the sensor, and FingerChip
T will deliver a burst of images.
At this time, two strategies are possible:
D reconstruct the complete fingerprint image, then perform
authentication
D analyse the images on the fly, and decide that user is recog-
nized if enough images are matched
Analysis on the fly is better from a user point of view, because
the acceptance can be given before the end of sweeping.
The clock rate has to be chosen to enable the user to move his
finger quite quickly, and in order to obtain many images that
overlap. So it is possible using only the images to reconstruct
the complete fingerprint without knowing the real speed of the
finger.
This is shown in the following figure.
Correlating two images to find out the distance between them
seems to be computer time intensive. This is more or less true
for the first two images, as we don’t know the finger’s speed,
but for the following images, the position is easily guessed as
the speed of the finger is more or less constant, so a clever
strategy may be used.
