FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TheL4936N/NHarebasedontheSGS-THOMSON
Microelectronics modular voltage regulator ap-
proach.Severalout-standingfeaturesandauxiliary
functionsareprovidedto meet the requirementsof
supplyingthemicroprocessorsystemsusedinauto-
motiveapplications.
Furthermorethe deviceis suitablealsoin otherap-
plicationsrequiringtwo stabilized voltages.
The modular approach allows other features and
functionsto be realized easilywhen required.
STANDBYREGULATOR
The standby regulator uses an Isolated Collector
Vertical PNP transistor as the regulating element.
This structure allows a verylow dropout voltage at
currentsup to 50mA. The dropoutoperationof the
standby regulator is maintained down to 2V input
supply voltage. The output voltage is regulated up
tothetransientinputsupplyvoltageof40V.Thisfea-
tureavoidsfunctionalinterruptions whichcould be
generatedby overvoltagepulses.
The typical curveof the standbyoutputvoltageas a
functionof theinputsupplyvoltageisshowninfig.1.
The current consumption of the device (quiescent
current) is less than 250
μ
A when output 2 is dis-
abled(standbymode).The dropoutvoltageis con-
trolled to reduce the quiescent current peak in the
undervoltage region and to improve the transient
responsein this region.

OUTPUT 2 VOLTAGE
The output2 regulatorusesthe sameoutputstruc-
tureasthestandbyregulator,butratedforanoutput
current of 500mA.
The output2 regulatorworks intrackingmode with
the standby outputvoltage as a referencevoltage
when the output 2 programming pin ADJ is con-
nected to V
