Current Limit Protection
ThePMB4000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsincludecurrent
limitingcircuitrythatallowsthemtowithstandcontinuous
overloadsorshortcircuitconditionsontheoutput.Thecur-
rentlimitisofhick-upmodetype.
Theregulatorwillresumenormaloperationafterremoval
oftheoverload.Theloaddistributionsystemshouldbe
designedtocarrythemaximumoutputshortcircuitcurrent
specified.
Input And Output Impedance
Theimpedanceofboththepowersourceandtheloadwill
interactwiththeimpedanceoftheDC/DCregulator.Itis
mostimportanttohavealowcharacteristicimpedance,
bothattheinputandoutput,astheregulatorshavealow
energystoragecapability.Usecapacitorsacrosstheinputif
thesourceinductanceisgreaterthan4.7H.Suitableinput
capacitorsare22F-220FlowESRceramics.
Maximum Capacitive Load
Whenpoweringloadswithsignificantdynamiccurrent
requirements,thevoltageregulationattheloadcanbe
improvedbyadditionofdecouplingcapacitanceattheload.
ThemosteffectivetechniqueistolocatelowESRceramic
capacitorsasclosetotheloadaspossible,usingseveral
capacitorstolowerthetotalESR.Theseceramiccapacitors
willhandleshortdurationhigh-frequencycomponents
ofdynamicloadchanges.Inaddition,highervaluesof
capacitors(electrolyticcapacitors)shouldbeusedtohandle
themid-frequencycomponents.Itisequallyimportant
tousegooddesignpracticewhenconfiguringtheDC
distributionsystem.
LowresistanceandlowinductancePCBlayoutsand
cablingshouldbeused.Rememberthatwhenusingremote
sensing,allresistance(includingtheESR),inductanceand
capacitanceofthedistributionsystemiswithinthefeedback
loopoftheregulator.Thiscanaffectontheregulators
compensationandtheresultingstabilityanddynamic
responseperformance.
VerylowESRandhighcapacitancemustbeusedwith
care.A“ruleofthumb”isthatthetotalcapacitancemust
neverexceedtypically500-700FifonlylowESR(<2m
)
ceramiccapacitorsareused.Ifmorecapacitanceisneeded,
acombinationoflowESRtypeandelectrolyticcapacitors
shouldbeused,otherwisethestabilitywillbeaffected.
