Thermal Considerations
General
ThePMB4000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsaredesigned
tooperateinavarietyofthermalenvironments,however
sufficientcoolingshouldbeprovidedtohelpensurereliable
operation.Heatisremovedbyconduction,convectionand
radiationtothesurroundingenvironment.Increasedairflow
enhancestheheattransferviaconvection.
Propercoolingcanbeverifiedbymeasuringthe
temperatureatthereferencepoint(Tref).
Calculation of ambient temperature
Byusingthethermalresistancethemaximumallowed
ambienttemperaturecanbecalculated.
A.Thepowerlossiscalculatedbyusingtheformula
((1/η )-1)×outputpower=powerlosses.
η=efficiencyofregulator.Example:95%=0.95
B.FindthevalueofthethermalresistanceRthTref-Ainthedia-
grambyusingtheairflowspeedatthemodule.Takethether-
malresistance×powerlosstogetthetemperatureincrease.
