AllPMB8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorshaveapositivere-
motesensepinthatcanbeusedtocompensateformoder-
ateamountsofresistanceinthedistributionsystemandal-
lowforvoltageregulationattheloadorotherselectedpoint.
Theremotesenselinewillcarryverylittlecurrentanddoes
notneedalargecrosssectionalarea.However,thesense
lineonthePCBshouldbelocatedclosetoagroundtraceor
groundplane.Theremotesensecircuitrywillcompensatefor
upto10%voltagedropbetweenthesensevoltageandthe
voltageattheoutputpinsfromVOnom.Iftheremotesenseis
notneededthesensepinshouldbeleftopenorconnected
tothepositiveoutput.
Remote Sense
Current Limit Protection
ThePMB8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsincludecurrent
limitingcircuitrythatallowsthemtowithstandcontinuous
overloadsorshortcircuitconditionsontheoutput.Theout-
putvoltagewilldecreasetowardszeroforoutputcurrentsin
excessofmaxoutputcurrent(Iomax).Whenthecurrentlimit
isreachedtheregulatorwillgointohiccupmode.Thecur-
rentlimitistemperaturedependent,i.e.thelimitdecrease
athigheroperatingtemperature,theregulatorisguaranteed
tostartatIOmaxx1.25@Tref115°C.Theregulatorwill
resumenormaloperationafterremovaloftheoverload.The
loaddistributionsystemshouldbedesignedtocarrythe
maximumoutputshortcircuitcurrentspecified.
Over Temperature Protection (OTP)
ThePMB8000SeriesDC/DCregulatorsareprotectedfrom
thermaloverloadbyaninternalovertemperatureshutdown
circuit.WhenthePCBtemperatureneartheICcircuitreach-
es130°Ctheconverterwillshutdownimmediately.The
regulatorwillmakecontinuousattemptstostartup(non-
latchingmode)andresumenormaloperationautomatically
whenthetemperaturehasdroppedbelowthetemperature
threshold.
Input And Output Impedance
Theimpedanceofboththepowersourceandtheloadwill
interactwiththeimpedanceoftheDC/DCregulator.Itis
mostimportanttohavealowcharacteristicimpedance,
bothattheinputandoutput,astheregulatorshavealow
energystoragecapability.Usecapacitorsacrosstheinputif
thesourceinductanceisgreaterthan4.7

Maximum Capacitive Load
Whenpoweringloadswithsignificantdynamiccurrent
requirements,thevoltageregulationattheloadcanbe
improvedbyadditionofdecouplingcapacitanceattheload.
ThemosteffectivetechniqueistolocatelowESRceramic
capacitorsasclosetotheloadaspossible,usingseveral
capacitorstolowerthetotalESR.Theseceramiccapacitors
willhandleshortdurationhigh-frequencycomponents
ofdynamicloadchanges.Inaddition,highervaluesof
capacitors(electrolyticcapacitors)shouldbeusedtohandle
themid-frequencycomponents.Itisequallyimportant
tousegooddesignpracticewhenconfiguringtheDC
distributionsystem.
LowresistanceandlowinductancePCBlayoutsand
cablingshouldbeused.Rememberthatwhenusingremote
sensing,allresistance(includingtheESR),inductanceand
capacitanceofthedistributionsystemiswithinthefeedback
loopoftheregulator.Thiscanaffectontheregulators
compensationandtheresultingstabilityanddynamic
responseperformance.
VerylowESRandhighcapacitancemustbeusedwith
care.A“ruleofthumb”isthatthetotalcapacitancemust
neverexceedtypically500-700
FifonlylowESR(<2m)
ceramiccapacitorsareused.Ifmorecapacitanceisneeded,
acombinationoflowESRtypeandelectrolyticcapacitors
shouldbeused,otherwisethestabilitywillbeaffected.
