PROTECTIONFEATURES
Input Under-Voltage Lockout: Theconverterisdesigned
toturnoffwhentheinputvoltageistoolow,helpingavoid
aninputsysteminstabilityproblem,describedinmoredetail
intheapplicationnotetitled“InputSystemInstability”.The
lockoutcircuitryisacomparatorwithDChysteresis.When
theinputvoltageisrising,itmustexceedthetypicalTurn-On
VoltageThresholdvalue(listedonthespecificationpage)
beforetheconverterwillturnon.Oncetheconverterison,
theinputvoltagemustfallbelowthetypicalTurn-OffVoltage
Thresholdvaluebeforetheconverterwillturnoff.
Output Current Limit: Oncetheoutputcurrentreaches
thecurrent-limitinceptionpoint,theconverterwilldecrease
theoutputvoltageastheoutputcurrentincreases.However,
oncetheimpedanceoftheshortacrosstheoutputissmall
enoughtomaketheoutputvoltagedropbelowthespecified
OutputDCCurrent-LimitShutdownVoltage,theconverter
turnsoff(seeFigure23).
Theconverterthenentersa“hiccupmode”whereitrepeat-
edlyturnsonandoffata5Hz(nominal)frequencywitha
5%dutycycleuntiltheshortcircuitconditionisremoved.
Thispreventsexcessiveheatingoftheconverterortheload
board.
Output Over-Voltage Limit: Ifthevoltageacrossthe
outputpinsexceedstheOutputOver-VoltageProtection
threshold,theconverterwillimmediatelystopswitching.This
preventsdamagetotheloadcircuitdueto1)excessivese-
riesresistanceinoutputcurrentpathfromconverteroutput
pinstosensepoint,2)areleaseofashort-circuitcondition,
or3)areleaseofacurrentlimitcondition.Loadcapacitance
determinesexactlyhowhightheoutputvoltagewillrisein
responsetotheseconditions.After200mstheconverterwill
automaticallyrestart.
Over-Temperature Shutdown: Atemperaturesensoron
theconvertersensestheaveragetemperatureofthemod-
ule.Thethermalshutdowncircuitisdesignedtoturnthe
converteroffwhenthetemperatureatthesensedlocation
reachestheOver-TemperatureShutdownvalue.Itwillallow
theconvertertoturnonagainwhenthetemperatureofthe
sensedlocationfallsbytheamountoftheOver-Temperature
ShutdownRestartHysteresisvalue.
