BASICOPERATIONANDFEATURES
Thesinglestagepowerconverterswitchesatafixedfre-
quencyforpredictableEMIperformance.Rectificationof
thetransformer’soutputisaccomplishedwithsynchronous
rectifiers.Thesedevices,whichareMOSFETswithaverylow
on-stateresistance,dissipatefarlessenergythanSchottky
diodes.ThisistheprimaryreasonthatthePowerQorcon-
verterhassuchhighefficiency,evenatverylowoutputvolt-
agesandveryhighoutputcurrents.
Dissipationthroughouttheconverterissolowthatitdoes
notrequireaheatsinkforoperation.Sinceaheatsinkisnot
required,thePowerQorconverterdoesnotneedametal
baseplateorpottingmaterialtohelpconductthedissipated
energytotheheatsink.ThePowerQorconvertercanthusbe
builtmoresimplyandreliablyusinghighyieldsurfacemount
techniquesonaPCBsubstrate.
ThePowerQorseriesofeighth-brick,quarter-brickandhalf-
brickconvertersusestheindustrystandardfootprintand
pin-outconfiguration.
CONTROLFEATURES
REMOTE ON/OFF (Pin 2):TheON/OFFinput,Pin2,permits
theusertocontrolwhentheconverterisonoroff.Thisinputis
referencedtothereturnterminaloftheinputbus,Vin(-).There
aretwoversionsoftheconverterthatdifferbythesenseofthe
logicusedfortheON/OFFinput.
In the positive logic version, the ON/OFF input is active high
(meaningthatahighturnstheconverteron).Inthenegative
logicversion,theON/OFFsignalisactivelow(meaningthata
lowturnstheconverteron).FigureAdetailsfivepossiblecircuits
for driving the ON/OFF pin. Figure B is a detailed look of the
internalON/OFFcircuitry.
REMOTE SENSE(+) (Pins 7 and 5):TheSENSE(+)inputs
correctforvoltagedropsalongtheconductorsthatconnect
theconverter’soutputpinstotheload.
Pin7shouldbeconnectedtoVout(+)andPin5shouldbe
connectedtoVout(-)atthepointontheboardwhereregula-
tionisdesired.Aremoteconnectionattheloadcanadjust
foravoltagedroponlyaslargeasthatspecifiedinthis
datasheet,thatis
[Vout(+)-Vout(-)]–[Vsense(+)-Vsense(-)]<

Pins7and5mustbeconnectedforproperregulationof
theoutputvoltage.Iftheseconnectionsarenotmade,the
converterwilldeliveranoutputvoltagethatisslightlyhigher
thanitsspecifiedvalue.
Note:theoutputover-voltageprotectioncircuitsensesthe
voltageacrosstheoutput(pins8and4)todeterminewhen
itshouldtrigger,notthevoltageacrosstheconverter’ssense
leads(pins7and5).Therefore,theresistivedroponthe
boardshouldbesmallenoughsothatoutputOVPdoesnot
trigger,evenduringloadtransients.
