PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The TLS2154, TLS2156, and TLS2158 preamplifiers function as read amplifiers or write drivers for the selected
head and can address four two-terminal thin-film or MIG recording heads. R/W and CS are connected to internal
pullup resistors. Internal pulldown resistors are connected to HS0, HS1, and HS2.
Mode selection for TLS2154, TLS2156, and TLS2158 is shown in Table 2 and head selection is shown in Table 3
and Table 4.

For the TLS2156, no head is selected and RDX and RDY are Hi Z.
write mode
Write mode is selected by taking both CS and R/W low. The head select inputs HS0, HS1, and HS2 select the
appropriate head. In write mode, the circuit acts as a current switch and write current toggles between the X
and Y directions of the head. Write current is toggled on the low-to-high transition of the WDX/WDY input for
flip-flop enabled devices. Write current is toggled on each transition of the WDX/WDY input for flip-flop disable
devices. A preceding read or idle mode initialized the write-data flip-flop to pass write current from the Y side
to the X side of the head. During the write mode, the high output level turns on the diode, which switches the
damping resistor into the circuit.
