BusArbitration
ThebusdesignoftheMCUprovidesforasinglebusmasteratanyonetime:eitherthe
MCUoranexternaldevice.Oneormoreoftheexternaldevicesonthebuscanhave
thecapabilityofbecomingbusmaster.Busarbitrationistheprotocolbywhichanexter-
naldevicebecomesbusmaster;thebuscontrollerintheMCUmanagesthebus
arbitrationsignalssothattheMCUhasthelowestpriority.Externaldevicesthatneedto
obtainthebusmustassertthebusarbitrationsignalsinacertainsequence.Systems
thatincludeseveraldevicesthatcanbecomebusmasterrequireexternalcircuitryto
assignprioritiestothedevices,sothatwhentwoormoreexternaldevicesattemptto
becomebusmasteratthesametime,theonehavingthehighestprioritybecomesthe
busmasterfirst.TheprotocolisexplainedfullyintheSIMmanual,howeverhereisthe
basicsequenceofevents:
Anexternaldeviceassertsthebusrequestsignal(BR),
TheMCUassertsthebusgrantsignaltoindicatethatthebusisavailable(BG),
Theexternaldeviceassertsthebusgrantacknowledgesignal(BGACK)toindicate
thatithasassumedbusmastership.
Busarbitrationrequestsarerecognizedduringnormalprocessing,HALTassertion,
whentheCPUhashaltedduetoadoublebusfault.
ResetOperation
TheMCUhasresetcontrollogictodeterminethecauseofresetandsynchronizeitif
necessary.IfanexternaldevicedrivestheRESETpinlow,theresetcontrollogicholds
RESETassertedinternallyuntiltheexternalRESETisreleased.Whentheresetcontrol
logicdetectsthattheexternalRESETisnolongerbeingdriven,itdrivesRESETlowfor
anadditional512cyclestoguaranteethislengthofresettotheentiresystem.IfRESET
isassertedfromanyothersource,theresetcontrollogicassertsRESETforaminimum
of512cyclesanduntilthesourceofresetisnegated.Figure20isatimingdiagramof
thepower-upresetoperation,showingtherelationshipbetweenRESET,V

signals.Duringtheresetperiod,theentirebus(exceptfornon-tri-statablesignals,which
aredriventotheirinactivestatethree-states.OnceRESETnegates,allcontrolsignals
aredriventotheirinactivestate,thedatabusisinreadmode,andtheaddressbusis
driven.Afterthis,thefirstbuscycleforRESETexceptionprocessingbegins.
RESETshouldbeassertedforatleast590clockperiodstoensurethattheMCUresets.
ResettingtheMCUcausesanybuscycleinprogresstoterminateasifDSACKxor
BERRhasbeenasserted.Inaddition,theMCUinitializesregistersappropriatelyfora
resetexception.
