Protectionagainstaccidentalshort circuitsandfault
conditions is mandatory in PC power supplies.
These protection circuits can be realized by using
many discrete components which occupy a lot of
PCBspace,designtimeinfine tuningthecircuit and
also addto assemblingcosts.
ST’ssinglechip TSM111ICprovidescompletepro-
tection circuits designeasier, with fewer number of
components.TSM111 is an idealsupervisor IC for
PC powersupplies.
The salient featuresand benefits of this device are
listed below:

out externalcomponent.

FEATURE DESCRIPTIONS
a)Overvoltageprotectioncanbeimplementedwith-
out any additional components.Overvoltagesense
levels for3.3V,5V,12Vare4V,6.1V,14.2Vrespec-
tively. With very little tolerances,betterprotectionis
achieved.
b) Overcurrent protectioncan beimplemented with
very small value sense resistors. As the current
sense thresholdlevels are set very low, regulation
is not affected.The current sense threshold levels
for 3.3V, 5V, 12V are 50mV, 50mV and 65mV re-
spectively.
c) The power goodsignal (pin9) is asserted to indi-
cate the 5V and 3.3V is above the under voltage
thresholdlevel. PG pin goes high when the above
conditionis reached.Pull up resistor R27 (3.1K) is
connectedto 5V STDBY supplyfrom this pin.
d) The timing of thepowergood signalcan be con-
trolledbyadjustingthe valueofthechargingcapaci-
tor on pin 10. With 2.2
μ
F/16V capacitoron pin 10,
400msecturn on delayis achieved.
e) Thepower supplycanbe operatedfrom 14.5Vto
36V.TheV

mustalwaysbehigherthanthesupply
voltageon the 12Vinput pin by 2V .i.e. if 14Vis ap-
