If the amplifier is broadband, then there may be many frequencies which meet the criteria for oscillation, giving rise to unwanted spurious.
To eliminate these unwanted spurious, a filter can be placed in the feedback path. The filter will have the effect of reducing the loop-gain of
the oscillator to <1, for signals (that have a multiple of 2p delay) outside the passband of the filter. Figure 3 shows the same simple
feedback oscillator with a controllable delay in the feedback path, with the addition of a bandpass filter in the feedback path.
The addition of the filter also has a dominant effect on the phase noise of the oscillator. The filter characteristics dominate the ‘Q’ factor of
the oscillator. The ‘Q’ of the oscillator is set by the phase-delay versus frequency characteristic of the loop. In the simple feedback oscillator
shown in Figure 1, the phase-delay versus frequency is set just by the delay characteristics of the transmission line and the amplifier, and
the ‘Q’ factor and resulting phase noise will be relatively poor. The ‘Q’ factor increases when filters with sharper phase-delay versus
frequency characteristics are used. The sharpness is generally determined by the number of stages in the filter.
