the SFF 8432 Improved Pluggable Formfactor housing
specificationfortheSFP+.ItcanbeinstalledinanyINF-
8074 or SFF-8431/2 compliant Small Form Pluggable
(SFP)portregardlessofhostequipmentoperatingstatus
TheAFBR-707SDZishot-pluggable,allowingthemod-
uletobeinstalledwhilethehostsystemisoperatingand
on-line.Uponinsertion,thetransceiverhousingmakes
initialcontactwiththehostboardSFPcage,mitigating
potentialdamageduetoElectro-StaticDischarge(ESD).
Digital Diagnostic Interface and Serial Identification
The two-wire interface protocol and signaling detail
are based on SFF-8431. Conventional EEPROM memo-
ry, bytes 0-255 at memory address 0xA0, is organized
in compliance with SFF-8431. New digital diagnostic
information, bytes 0-255 at memory address 0xA2, is
complianttoSFF-8472.Thenewdiagnosticinformation
providestheopportunityforPredictiveFailureIdentifi-
cation,CompliancePrediction,FaultIsolationandCom-
ponentMonitoring.
Predictive Failure Identification
TheAFBR-707SDZpredictivefailurefeatureallowsahost
toidentifypotentiallinkproblemsbeforesystemperfor-
manceisimpacted.Prioridentificationoflinkproblems
enables a host to service an application via“fail over”
to a redundant link or replace a suspect device, main-
taining system uptime in the process. For applications
whereultra-highsystemuptimeisrequired,adigitalSFP
providesameanstomonitortworeal-timelasermetrics
associated with observing laser degradation and pre-
dictingfailure:averagelaserbiascurrent(Tx_Bias)and
averagelaseropticalpower(Tx_Power).
Compliance Prediction
Compliancepredictionistheabilitytodetermineifan
opticaltransceiverisoperatingwithinitsoperatingand
environmental requirements. AFBR-707SDZ devices
provide real-time access to transceiver internal supply
voltageandtemperature,allowingahosttoidentifypo-
tentialcomponentcomplianceissues.Receivedoptical
powerisalsoavailabletoassesscomplianceofacable
plantandremotetransmitter.Whenoperatingoutofre-
quirements,thelinkcannotguaranteeerrorfreetrans-
mission.
Fault Isolation
Thefaultisolationfeatureallowsahosttoquicklypin-
pointthelocationofalinkfailure,minimizingdowntime.
Foropticallinks,theabilitytoidentifyafaultatalocal
device,remotedeviceorcableplantiscrucialtospeed-
ing service of an installation. AFBR-707SDZ real-time
monitors of Tx_Bias, Tx_Power, Vcc, Temperature and
Rx_Powercanbeusedtoassesslocaltransceivercurrent
operating conditions. In addition, status flags TX_DIS-
ABLEandRxLossofSignal(LOS)aremirroredinmemory
andavailableviathetwo-wireserialinterface.
Component Monitoring
ComponentevaluationisamorecasualuseoftheAFBR-
707SDZ real-time monitors of Tx_Bias, Tx_Power, Vcc,
TemperatureandRx_Power.Potentialusesareasdebug-
gingaidsforsysteminstallationanddesign,andtrans-
ceiver parametric evaluation for factory or field quali-
fication. For example, temperature per module can be
observedinhighdensityapplicationstofacilitatether-
malevaluationofblades,PCIcardsandsystems.
