VIII - APPLICATION INFORMATION ON FRAME
SCANNING IN SWITCHED MODE

VIII.1 - Fundamentals
(see Figure80)
The secondary winding of EHT transformer pro-
vides the energyrequired by frame yoke.
The frame current modulation is achieved by
modulating the horizontal saw-tooth current and
subsequentintegrationbya”L.C” networktoreject
the horizontalfrequencycomponent.
VIII.2 - GeneralDescription
The basic circuit is the phase comparator ”C
1
”
which compares the horizontal saw-tooth and the
output voltage of ErrorAmplifier ”A”.
The comparator output will go ”high” when the
horizontalsaw-toothvoltage is higher than the ”A”
output voltage. Thus, the Pin 4 output signal is
switched insynchronizationwith the horizontalfre-
quency and the duty cycle is modulated at frame
frequency.
A driver stage delivers the currentrequired by the
externalpower switch.
The external thyristor provides for energy transfer
between transformer and frame yoke.
The thyristorwill conduct during the last portion of
horizontaltrace phaseandforhalfof the horizontal
retrace.
The inverse parallel-connecteddiode”D” conducts
during the secondportionof horizontal retrace and
at the beginningof horizontaltrace phase.
Main advantagesof this systemare :

Power thyristor soft ”turn-on”
Once thethyristorhasbeen triggered,thecurrent
gradually rises from 0 to IP, where IP will reach
the maximumvalueatthe endof horizontaltrace.
The slope current is determined by, the current
available through the secondary winding, the
yoke impedance and the ”L.C.” filter charac-
teristics.

Power thyristor soft ”turn-off”
The secondaryoutputcurrent beginsdecreasing
and fallsto 0atthemiddleof retrace.Thethyristor
is thusautomatically”turned-off”.
