General Description:
The TQ5M34 is a downconverter-mxer capable of being used
over a wide range of RF and IF frequencies. The mxer is
implemented with a single common-source GaAs MESFET
and is designed to operate with supply voltages between 1.8
to 5 Volts. The LPCC packaging of the TQ5M34 allows the
device to be used at higher frequencies than the simlar
TQ5M31 device. However, careful attention must be paid to
the application circuit. The application information below will
concentrate on the techniques used for designing a TQ5M34
circuit for use in the higher frequency bands such as Korean
PCS, US-PCS, and WCDMA.
The TQ5M34 is in a mniature, low cost, 3X3mm 8 lead LPCC
Package 0.9 mmhigh. Both the LO and RF ports have
internal DC blocking capacitors. The resistors and capacitor
attached to the GIC pin allow adjustment of Gain, Third Order
Intercept, and Power Supply Current for a wide variety of
receiver requirements.
Pinout Description:
The TQ5M34 contains three main stages: a saturated LO
buffer, a mxer, and an IF amplifier (see Figure 1 and 2). The
LO buffer amplifies the –4dBmnomnal signal at pin 6 and
applies the signal to the gate of a passive FET mxer. The
drain of the LO buffer is brought out externally at pin 8. This
pin must be tuned externally and biased via an inductor, in
order to apply maximumvoltage swing to the mxer.
The RF input signal is applied to pin 4 of the device where it is
routed to the mxer FET and converted down to the IF
frequency. The mxed product is then amplified by the IF
output stage.
The IF output at pin 2 can be matched to either 50 ohms or
the input of the IF filter via an inductor and several capacitors.
The inductor also serves as the DC feed to the IF amplifier.
The source of the IF amplifier FET is brought out to pin 7. Pin
7 is called the GIC pin, short for “Gain Intercept Current”. By
varying an external RC network on that pin, some degree of
control over CG, IP3 and Idd is possible.

Grounding:
The TQ5M34 package offers much improved performance
over the SOT-23. However, in order to take advantage of it
care must be taken to keep the distance fromground returns
to package as short as possible. The GIC cap, LO tuning
bypass cap, and IF shunt cap are the most critical in this
regard. Poor circuit board design can result a circuit that
oscillates. Figure 2. shows the critical areas.
