Programmer’sModel
TheprogrammingmodeloftheCPU32consistsoftwogroupsofregisters:usermodel
andsupervisormodel,whichcorrespondtotheuserandsupervisorprivilegelevels.
Executingattheuserprivilegelevel,userprogramscanonlyusetheregistersofthe
usermodel.Executingatthesupervisorlevel,systemsoftwareusesthecontrolregis-
tersofthesupervisorleveltoperformsupervisorfunctions.
Thesupervisorlevelhashigherprivilegesthantheuserlevel.Notallinstructionsare
permittedtoexecuteinthelowerprivilegeduserlevel,butallinstructionsareavailable
atthesupervisorlevel.Thisschemeallowsaseparationofsupervisoranduserlevels,
andsothesupervisorcanprotectsystemresourcesfromuncontrolledaccess.Thepro-
cessorusestheprivilegelevelindicatedbytheSbitinthestatusregistertoselecteither
theuserorsupervisorprivilegelevelandeithertheUSPorSSPforstackoperations.
Theuserprogrammingmodelremainsunchangedfromprevious68000familymicropro-
cessors.Thesupervisorprogrammingmodel,whichsupplementstheuserprogramming
modelisusedexclusivelybytheCPU32systemprogrammerswhoutilizethesupervisor
privilegeleveltoimplementsensitiveoperatingsystemfunctions.Thesupervisorpro-
grammingmodelcontainsallthecontrolstoaccessandenablethespecialfeaturesof
theCPU32.Allapplicationsoftware,writtentorunatthenonprivilegeduserlevel,
migratestotheCPU32fromany68000platformwithoutmodification.Theprogramming
modelsareshowninFigure18andFigure19.
Registers
RegistersD7-D0areusedasdataregistersandreadilysupport8-bit(byte),16-bit
(word)and32-bit(longword)operandlengthsforalloperations.RegistersA6-A0and
theuserandsupervisorstackpointersareaddressregistersthatmaybeusedassoft-
warestackpointersofbaseaddressregisters.RegisterA7isaregisterthatappliesto
theuserstackpointerintheuserprivilegelevelandtothesupervisorstackpointerinthe
userprivilegelevel.Inaddition,theaddressregistersmaybeusedforwordandlong-
wordoperations.Allofthe16general-purposeregisters(D7-D0,A7-A0)maybeused
asindexregisters.
ThePCcontainstheaddressofthenextinstructiontobeexecutedbytheCPU32.
