ChannelOrthogonality
Traditionally,timersystemshavebeenlimitedbythespecificfunctionsofchannelpins
dedicatedtoperformtimefunctionssuchasinputcapture,outputcompare,orpulse
accumulation.AllchannelsoftheTPUcontainidenticalhardwareandarefunctionally
equivalentinoperation,suchthatanychannelcanbeconfiguredtoperformanytime
function.Theusercontrolsthecombinationoftimefunctions;theonlyconstraintisthe
numberofpinsavailablefortimingfunctions.
Inter-channelCommunication
TheTPU’sabilitytoserviceitselfrequiresacontinuousflowofdirectandindirectcom-
munication.Directcommunicationisaccomplishedthrougha“changechannel”feature
inwhichanychanneloftheTPUcanoperateanotherchanneltoaffectitsstate.Indirect
communicationisprovidedbyalinkfeatureinwhichanychannelcanlonktoonemore
channels,includingitself,tosignalaneedforfutureservice.Asaresult,theusercan
referencetheoperationofonechanneltotheoccurrenceofaspecificactiononanother
channel.
ProgrammableChannelService
Priority
Applicationsmayrequiredifferentprioritiesofeventservice.Thechannelservicepriority
maybeprogrammedtooneofthreelevels:high,middle,andlow.Theschedulerallows
calculationofworst-caselatencyforeventservicingandensuresservicingofallchan-
nelsbypreventingpermanentblockage.
