BackgroundDebugMode
Microcomputersystemsgenerallyprovideadebugger,implementedinsoftware,for
systemanalysisatthelowestlevel.ThebackgrounddebugmodeintheCPU32is
uniqueinthatthedebuggerhasbeenimplementedinCPUmicrocode.Registerscanbe
viewedand/oraltered,memorycanbereadorwrittento,andtestfeaturescanbe
invoked.Incorporatingthesecapabilitieson-chipsimplifiestheenvironmentinwhichthe
in-circuitemulatoroperates.
DeterministicOpcodeTracking
CPU32functioncodeoutputsareaugmentedbytwosupplementarysignalstomonitor
theinstructionpipeline.Theinstructionpipe(PIPE)outputindicatesthestartofeach
newinstructionandeachmid-instructionpipelineadvance.Theinstructionfetch
(FETCH)outputidentifiesthebuscyclesinwhichtheoperandisloadedintotheinstruc-
tionpipeline.PipelineflushesarealsosignaledwithIFETCH.Monitoringthesetwo
signalsallowsabusanalyzertosynchronizeitselftotheinstructionstreamandmonitor
itsactivity.
