Theclocksynthesizer(Figure22)canoperatefromanon-chipphaselockedloop(PLL)
usinganexternalcrystalconnectedbetweentheEXTALandXTALpinsasareference
frequencysource.A32.768kHzwatchcrystalprovidesaninexpensivereference,but
thereferencecrystalfrequencycanbeanyfrequencyfrom25-50kHz.Outsidethe25-
50kHzrange,anexternaloscillatorcanbeusedwiththeon-chipsynthesizerandVCO,
orthefrequencycanbedrivendirectlyintotheEXTALpin(theXTALpinshouldbeleft
floatingforthiscase).
Thesystemclockfrequencyisprogrammablefrom131kHztothemaximumclockfre-
quencywitharesolutionof131kHz.Aseparatepowerpin(V
DDSYN
)isusedtoallowthe
clockcircuitstorunwiththerestoftheMCUpowereddownandtoprovideincreased
noiseimmunityfortheclockcircuits.Ifforsomereasontheexternalsignalisremoved
fromthedevicethentheclocksynthesizerwillgenerateitsowninternalclocksignalto
allowthedevicetoentersomekindoferrorrecoveryroutine.ThisisknownasLIMP
mode.Theclockfrequencygeneratedwillnothaveanassociatedtimingspecbut
shouldbearound9MHz.
Chip-selectSubmodule
Typicalmicrocomputersystemsrequireexternalhardwaretoprovideselectsignalsto
externalperipherals.ThisMCUintegratesthesefunctionson-chipinordertoprovidethe
cost,speed,andreliabilitybenefitsofahigherlevelofintegration.Thechip-selectsig-
nalscanalsobeprogrammedasoutputenable,readorwritestrobe,orIACKsignals.
Sinceinitializationsoftwarewouldprobablyresideinaperipheralmemorydevicecon-
trolledbythechip-selectcircuits,aCSBOOTregisterprovidesdefaultresetvaluesto
supportbootstrapoperation.
