Power Management Mode (PMM)
In Power Management Mode, the HyperJack 1000 PoE module has all the functionality of auto mode and
also has the additional capability of performing power management, supporting AC disconnect and
recognizing legacy devices. Power Management Mode achieves this by communicating with an external
controller via the I
2C interface.
Power Management Mode can be enabled by holding the MS pin high when the device comes out of
reset.
Power Management Mode allows the external controller to advance thru the states of powering a PD by
calling “functions” in the device to perform tasks such as discovery, classification and power up.
The user simply writes/reads thru the I
2C interface and waits for the function done bit to be set. If an A/D
measurement was performed during the function the results can be accessed by going to the read mode
and addressing the proper register.
The set of functions and associated diagram are shown below.
PMM Functions: (see figure 5)
Disable -
Disables the port and resets all functions.
Discovery 1 -
Enables the discovery 1 condition which applies a 4.4V across the PD and
measures current and stores the resulting current.
Discovery 2 -
Enables the discovery 2 condition which applies a 8.8V across the PD and
measures and stores the resulting current.
V Sample -
Measures the voltage between the P and N pins and stores the result in the A/D
voltage register.
Legacy -
Enables the 3.5mA current source for measuring capacitance and measures the
voltage across the P and N terminals and stores the result in the A/D voltage
register.
Classify -
Enables the classification condition which applies 17.5V across the PD and
measures and stores the resulting current.
Rup Pwr -
Turns on the output switch while controlling the current beginning delivery to the
PD until the PD current needs are met or the max current is reached.
C Sample -
Continues Sample mode cycle performing 31 current measurements and 1
voltage measurement. After each measurement the contents for the appropriate
register are updated.
Rdwn -
Turns off the output switch while controlling current until output current reaches
0mA.
AC Low -
Turns on AC Low driver circuit, measure voltage between P and N and store
results in A/D voltage registers.
AC High -
Turns on AC High driver circuit, measure voltage between P and N and store
results in A/D voltage registers.
ISample -
Measures the current and stores the result in the A/D current register.
TSample -
Measures the internal die temperature and stores the result in the A/D
temperature register.
