Discovery:
The external controller starts the discovery process by calling the discovery functions for the port
(Discovery1: 4.4V; Discovery2: 8.8V). The controller reads the A/D resistor values from a register after each
discovery function call. The controller can then determine whether or not it chooses to accept or reject the
device as a valid PD to power. This allows the process to support IEEE standard or legacy PDs.
Classification:
After successful discovery of a valid PD, the controller can optionally call the classification functions (or
simply advance to the powered states). Like discovery (but voltage approx. 17.5V), it reads results of the
A/D registers in the device, and decides how to classify the PD. This categorizes the PD according to power
needs, and the port status register is updated with the result of this process. After classification is complete,
the module sets the appropriate bits in the port read register and the controller advances to the powered
state by calling up the appropriate function in the device.
Powered state:
The controller can begin the process of supplying power to the PD by calling the ramp power functions in
the device. The module then applies the 48V to the PD. The controller then continuously samples voltage
and current by repeatedly calling these functions. The real-time results of the voltage and current are
available in the port registers of the device. The controller will then determine when to remove power and
exit this state, in the event of a fault or disconnect event, when sampling those registers.
