For this example the order of traffic classes in terms of QoS requirements is as follows:
1. CBR.1 and VBR.1
2. VBR.2
3. VBR.3
4. GFR
5. UBR.
The partition occurs according to that order, see
Table 9
.
If UBR traffic has occupied its partition (30k cells = threshold #2) then GFR traffic (= the
next higher priority traffic class) can still use 50k-30k=20k cells (= threshold #4 -
threshold #2). If again GFR has occupied its partition (50k cells = threshold #4) then
VBR.3 traffic (= the next higher prior traffic class) can still use 60k-50k=10k cells (=
threshold #5 - threshold #4).This mechanism applies again between VBR.2 and VBR.3.
These 20k for GFR traffic are a kind of guaranteed buffer space for GFR as long as that
buffer space isn’t demanded from the traffic classes with higher global buffer PPD/EPD
thresholds like VBR.2 PPD (= threshold #6) and VBR.3 PPD (= threshold #5). This kind
of guaranteed buffer space is in the case of the highest priority nrt-traffic class (in this
example VBR.2) actually a guaranteed buffer space like the 256 cells for rt-traffic.
