As global buffer EPD thresholds (BufNrtEPD) are not useful for VBR-nrt (as VBR-nrt is
already policed), BufNrtEPD of VBR.2 and VBR.3 has to be set to maximum value

TrafClassMax (= threshold #6) has to be set at minimum to a value which contains the
necessary amount of guaranteed buffer space for VBR.2 and VBR.3 (= threshold #4
-threshold #3) in order to make possible the usage of this guaranteed buffer space.
TrafClassMax of VBR.2 and VBR.3 could have the same value.
ABR, GFR and UBR
BufNrtMax/BufNrtEPD of ABR is normally similar to those of GFR (probably even
concerning all types of thresholds).
BufNrtMax of ABR should be chosen about 70% to 80% of the global buffer and
BufNrtEPD of ABR about 50% to 60%. BufNrtEPD of ABR should be approximately in
the order of magnitude of the BufNrtMax for UBR. For simplification no BufNrtEPD of
ABR will be used (due to the existence of ABR CI thresholds).
In this example global buffer EPD threshold for ABR isn’t used, i.e. BufNrtEPD of ABR
has to be set to maximum value FFFF

The global buffer maximum fill/PPD thresholds #3 (BufNrtMax of ABR, GFR and UBR)
have the same values. TrafClassMax is set to maximum value FFFF
H
as the
BufNrtMax/BufNrtEPD thresholds of ABR/GFR/UBR are the lowest one of all traffic
classes. So in the case of exclusive ABR,GFR or UBR traffic during a longer time period
only global buffer occupation up to these global thresholds BufNrtMax/BufNrtEPD is
possible and so always enough buffer space is available for the higher priority traffic
classes VBR.2 and VBR.3.
For GFR there is the global buffer EPD CLP1 threshold #1 (represented by the registers
UEC/DEC; "Low water mark" according to [

]) and the global buffer EPD threshold #2
(BufNrtEPD of GFR, "High water mark" according to [
4
]). The thresholds implemented in
the ABM for GFR match exactly the definition in [
4
].
Note: For this example applies that the UBR traffic consists only of packets (framebased
UBR). This guarantees that UBR traffic is limited by its EPD threshold #1 and
therefore the buffer space between this EPD threshold #1 and the PPD threshold
#3 is available for ABR and GFR.
