Schedulers and Global Queues per ABM Core
Both the upstream and the downstream ABM Core have two global queues, the virtual
empty cell queue (= no storage of empty cells takes places) and the global real time
bypass, and 48 schedulers which are connected over a round robin multiplexer and a
priority multiplexer as shown in
Figure 1.

Empty Cell Queue
The empty cell queue generates empty cell cycles for the ABM to do the SDRAM refresh
or for rate adaptation. Each time an empty cell cycle is generated it is immediately
forwarded to the priority mux. That is necessary to guarantee punctual execution of the
SDRAM refresh (for function of a priority mux, see [

] page 23). Note that empty cells
are not transmitted via UTOPIA, but the interface stops cell transmission for each empty
cell cycle.
Global Real Time Bypass (= Common Real Time Queue)
This real time queue bypasses the 48 schedulers and can be used e.g. for multicast
downstream or cascading of ABMs (see [
3
]). It is an individual queue which has the pre-
assigned QID=0. Typically it is assigned to an individual traffic class. Therefore the user
