The VBR.1 real time queue is an exception, as its guaranteed rate is not limited, but the
traffic of each connection is limited by policing. Its size is typically slightly larger than the
CBR.1 queue, e.g. 1024 cells.
For one VBR.2 traffic class a maximum load of 98% is assumed, giving resulting in a
shared buffer size of 600 packets for a packet loss probability of 10
-11
(see Figure
13
).
This can be achieved by increasing each guaranteed rate by a factor of 1/0.98.
Assuming that VBR.2 carries LAN traffic with a maximum packet length of 33 cells the
required shared buffer would be 19 800 cells.
The second VBR.2 traffic class is assumed to transport IP packets with a maximum
length of 180 cells. With a given buffer size of 30 000 cells the maximum load can be
calculated to about 92% with 10

packet loss probability.
The remaining buffer space of 65 536-256-1024-19 800-30 000 = 14456 cells is
available for UBR. For this traffic class no guaranteed rates are defined. The queue gets
the smallest weight and collects as much packets as possible. This queue feeds the
scheduler output pipe when no VBR traffic is available, thus bringing the usage closer to
100%.
The following picture shows the bandwidth assignment for this example.

The standard specifications demand a granularity < 1% for the transmission rate e.g. a
user wants during the connection setup a rate of 1 Mbit/s then the actually agreed value
